I thoroughly enjoyed this Masterclass and learning from Robin Roberts! Her poise and journalism experience is beyond evident, along with her authenticity and humor.

Learning more about her and her journey was so insightful and reiterated that even someone in the “celebrity light” as herself (and RuPaul from my last class) still struggle and deal with the same things. Fear, self-doubt, self-consciousness around our “mess.”

Stepping truly into who you are and what you were put on this earth to do is so core to being able to step into whatever you are doing with the most success and ability to positively impact others.

Make your mess your message!
— Robin Roberts

Oh, how this resonated! So many times I think we want to hide whatever we think our mess is, that it makes us less “perfect”, less “shiny”, less “appealing” - when at the end of the day, it actually makes us more vulnerable, more human, more approachable, and more apt to reach and help someone.

By sharing our story and putting ourselves out there, perhaps we just might be able to be of service to others. As well as to be able to connect and not have to navigate these waters or the landscape of life feeling alone.

As Robin talked about this and using the platform you have, it truly clarified that we don’t have to “wait” for some perfectly orchestrated moment but rather be aware and open to the opportunities in front of us.

Putting ourselves and our mess/message out there also includes speaking from the heart and being vulnerable. Something that anyone who loves Brene Brown as I do has heard about and is familiar with. (If you aren’t just check out her Netflix special!)

Change the way you think to change the way you feel.
— Robin Roberts

Shifting your mindset and the lens you view things through, will ultimately shift the way you feel. Robin shared an example of this related to thinking about how overwhelmed you can feel. Instead of thinking “I have to do this” shifting it to “ I get to do this".

This also applies to flexing your optimistic muscle and that all the things you want to have happen in your life are possible. As Robin puts it, you are able to climb the next mountain you have to because look at all the mountains you have already climbed to get where you are.

Our minds are our most powerful and can be our weakest. Catching these thoughts and choosing the see the good and making that our default is a way Robin shared we can ultimately then change the way we feel.

In doing this, it has also helped me to freely showcase and bring who I truly am to everything I do. It is no longer an option or a thought to play small. The more we bring ourselves, we are authentic. The more we are authentic, the more we can communicate and effectively connect with others.

Revealing who you are - who you really are - in your work life will help more than hurt you
— Robin Roberts
